This game is actually freakin fun now. I barely have anything, but I can get on and chat with my entire alliance. We're going to war with another small alliance, and just doing a bunch of espianoge, etc, to get ready for it.
Quite fun without all the really high players destroying me.

Build good defenses. I have about a thousand turrets on each planet, and I can leave it for a day or two with over a mil of resources. Nobody attacks, and usually nobody even espionages me.
