Coming first is a lot more prestigious than coming third or even second. That's how it is in any competition. Saying I am number one is much more powerful than saying I'm top three.

Regardless, the Olympics brought with them environmental degradation, an increase in homelessness, a lot of debt (money that could be much better spent solving Vancouver's problems), invasion of native lands, and loss of civil liberties, among other things. So what's the point of all these medals anyway?

They also made a but load of money on tourists and traveling expenses to Vancouver. So it kind of was a benefit for them.

Nokill's absolutely right. They spent billions of dollars on these Olympics, money they're not getting back any time soon. Montreal, who hosted the Olympics in 1976, paid off its debt in 2002.
