So yeah, for those of you that don't know/don't use Steam, the Steam forums have been down for almost a week now. This happened after there was an "intrusion" of the Steam forums and database. You should probably change anything that you feel is at risk. Mr. Gabe Newell gave a public service announcement on the website.
Our Steam forums were defaced on the evening of Sunday, November 6. We began investigating and found that the intrusion goes beyond the Steam forums. We learned that intruders obtained access to a Steam database in addition to the forums. This database contained information including user names, hashed and salted passwords, game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and encrypted credit card information. We do not have evidence that encrypted credit card numbers or personally identifying information were taken by the intruders, or that the protection on credit card numbers or passwords was cracked. We are still investigating. We don’t have evidence of credit card misuse at this time. Nonetheless you should watch your credit card activity and statements closely. While we only know of a few forum accounts that have been compromised, all forum users will be required to change their passwords the next time they login. If you have used your Steam forum password on other accounts you should change those passwords as well. We do not know of any compromised Steam accounts, so we are not planning to force a change of Steam account passwords (which are separate from forum passwords). However, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to change that as well, especially if it is the same as your Steam forum account password. We will reopen the forums as soon as we can. I am truly sorry this happened, and I apologize for the inconvenience. Gabe. http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/index.php http://www.forbes.com/sites/danielnyegr ... edit-card/ The PlayStation Network was intruded only a few months ago. Is this the end or only the beginning of something bigger? |

Steams been around since 2003 and this is the first time there has been an intrusion. Chances are someone spent a few years looking at steams network architecture before they finally found an exploit. They'll just find the hole and plug it. Besides, if Steam has done there encryption right which I can only assume they have, you'll be long dead before anyone actually manages to decrepit it. And the PlayStation network was Sonys own fault. I mean having users passwords stored in PLAIN TEXT and then having a security number to stop the PS3 being jailbreaked, which is supposed to be a different number for every PS3, THE SAME NUMBER, and THEN you go a piss off a load of hackers! They were just sticking there dick in a bees nest..... |

Ah, my mistake. I was putting them together to make it sound dramatic lol. But dang, that's some crazy stuff. The Steam forums are back up so it looks like things are settling down. |
