The text is hard to read, especially the 'th' part. Also, it's not very sharp. It doesn't really add anything to the sig, and just distracts.

The background looks like you just blurred some random stuff. That can work, but it is kinda busy. Also, it is a bit cooler (more blue) than the render. You might want to keep the colors consistent, but I don't know what you were going for.

The render is a lot darker than the background. That draws your attention towards the bg and away from the render, where you probably want it. Usually you want the focal point of your sig to be brighter, or at least not a lot darker.

The edge of the render looks different on the left vs. right, and the white spots are only on the right side. Might want them on both. The render could be sharper, especially the eyes.

When I need to sharpen a sig I use Unsharp Mask with a radius of 0.3 and usually around 150%. If you need more or less, adjust the amount. Don't make the radius too big or you will get bad halos. Use layer masks if you only want to sharpen parts of it.

I was bored, so I messed around with yours a bit in photoshop.

I darkened the corners/sides, lightened the render a bit, sharpened the face and text, blurred the bg some more, and added lighting to the right side with a light green 300px soft brush, and set the layer to soft light.

phoenix is right.
and never forget, blur and burn tool are your biggest friends.:)

+one of my fav. tricks: if you dont like the outcome at all, but still have some nice parts in the sig itself, just do what i did with yours:

burn tool everything around your focal point.(you should have your focal on a black or white bg now)
then use the tips phoenix gave you. lighten the hotspots, add gradients, and a nice font. and remember to take a look at image>adjustments(should be the right name. i got the ger. version, correct me if im wrong) there are a lot of options to change contrast+lighting. this can fix some problems with your lighting easily.
its no big deal but when you do it right the outcome looks pretty cool imo.
->did it on your sig:

(look at my current sig. its one of my best, about2 years old tho :) i used the same technique on it,too.just with a little bit more effort heh :P )
